Porquerolles: the most beautiful places to visit
Do you want to visit a corner of paradise on an island while staying in France? Take a trip to Porquerolles. Today, the island is part of the Port-Cros National Park, one of France’s eleven national centers for the protection of nature and biodiversity. Indeed, it is a true natural setting in the middle of the Mediterranean. Here are the 5 best places to absolutely visit!
The Porquerolles lighthouse
When you visit Porquerolles, you absolutely must not miss its historic lighthouse. It was built in 1830 and sits more than 84 m above sea level. It is an essential part of the island’s heritage and you must discover it during your stay.
Sainte-Anne church in Porquerolles
It was initially just a military chapel. It was not until 1929 that it became a parish church in its own right. The church of Sainte-Anne hides a very special treasure. Indeed, a soldier convalescing at the Porquerolles Sanitary Refuge in 1869 engraved the fourteen stations of the Stations of the Cross in solid walnut wood.
The mill of happiness
If there is something that should not be missed when visiting Porquerolles, it is one of its many mills. Located very close to Fort Sainte Agathe, the “Moulin du Bonheur” is a typical example of the windmills of Provence. We owe its restoration to the Port-Cros National Park. It is possible to discover it on a guided tour from May to September. Admission is free for those under 18.
Courtade beach
It is the largest beach on the island, also the easiest to access on foot or by sea. Located just 15 minutes on foot from the village, or 5 minutes by bike, this beach is a mixture of pebbles and White sand. It is also made up of a massive eucalyptus forest which offers fragrance and shade during the summer season.
The island’s wine estate
This vineyard has the particularity of being island and being protected by the status of Porquerolles Island National Park. It is classified as AOP Côtes-de-Provence and certified organic since 2015. From this wine estate, white wines and rosés with notes of sea spray can be produced. As a guarantee of quality, Chanel bought the estate and intends to produce exceptional wines there.
